Apples and Arsenic, Oh My!

11/21/2011

You may have heard recent news reports on the surprising claim that the poisonous element arsenic is found in apple juice. Nationwide, families are foregoing apple juice and many apple juice manufacturers are losing money based on these accusations.

Is it all hype? Or is drinking apple juice truly dangerous to one's health?

Dr. Oz is the person responsible for creating the hype.
Read his article and see the results here:
http://www.doctoroz.com/videos/dr-oz-investigates-arsenic-apple-juice

Juice companies are outraged.
Read their responses here:
http://www.doctoroz.com/videos/juice-companies-respond

The FDA's response: http://www.fda.gov/Food/ResourcesForYou/Consumers/ucm271595.htm

As chemists and as consumers, it is important to understand results before making conclusions.

Based on the above articles, what do you conclude?
Are the arsenic levels in apple juice safe or not?

The articles about arsenic in apples are very worrisome to me. The fact that the amount of arsenic exceeds in many cases the amount allowed in water shows some kind of in-action by apple juice companies. More care should be taken to remove harmful arsenic from all apples, before someone sues or falls ill from it.

I think that people were over reacting about the arsenic. I don't think the FDA wouldn't have let these companies sell tainted products. I think people should know the real facts about arsenic before they freak out.

I would thimk that with the FDA saying that the apple juice is okay to consume, then apple juice should be safe for buying. Though to be on the safe side, one could be cautious about buying, say, 3 jugs of apple juice. The tests didn't specify the amounts of organic arsenic versus inorganic, so it probabley shouldn't be of that much concern. Furthermore, how many arsenic related deaths have there been? If the amounts in apple juice were that dangerous, wouldn't the FDA be more concerned?

Arsenic is also found naturally in the soil and is bound to transfer to the fruits. However, the amount of inorganic arsenic is so small, while the amount of inorganic arsenic is so plentyful, it wont have any major effects in our bodies.

Based on the information above, I believe that the arsenic levels in apple juice are essentially harmless. If the FDA and other juice companies claim that the organic arsenic in apple juice is harmless, then they most likely are harmless. Since the test on the Dr. Oz show was proved inacurrate, the arsenic levels in apple juice are probably safe to drink.

I think the levels of arsenic in apple juice are safe. One reason why is that the FDA has been studying these levels for several years compared to the Dr. Oz show, which has studied these levels for only a brief amount of time. Also, it appears that he only studied five brands of apple juice. Another reason is that the study done by Dr. Oz does not say if the arsenic that was found was organic or inorganic. This would make a huge difference because according to the FDA, organic arsenic is safe but inorganic arsenic is harmful.

In my opinion if there is arsnic in the apple juice then it is unsafe to sell. It doesnt matter how small of a percentage it is, its still there. People give apple juice to there small children and that ammount of arsnic coulb be enough to hurt them.

I find that arsenic in our apple juice is not a concern. It has not affected us in any way before, and it still hasn't either. It hadn't even been brought to our attention before Dr. Oz tested it. According to the apple juice companies and the FDA, it is not harmful. My guess is that there is either a larger amount of Organic Arsenic in the juice or it has been balanced out with a base. They should really be testing what kind of Arsenic it is, then seeing if it is a problem.

At first, I thought this was a great cause for worry. However, there is not a lot of arsenic in the apple juice. how much arsenic does it take to be a health hazard? I don't think that 36 parts per billion is a lot.

The FDA tested for the total amount of arsenic. After which they tested for both types of arsenic: organic (harmless) and inorganic (harmful). The FDA found safe safe levels. Dr.Oz's study only measured the total amount of arsenic. They did not differentiate between the good and the bad types of arsenic. Without knowing the specific ratios of inorganic to organic arsenic it is not possible to conclude whether the tested arsenic is harmful or not. There could be more of the harmless arsenic and less of the harmful one or vice versa. Plus Dr. Oz's lab results standard deviation is +/- 20%. So the test themselves are not 100% accurate. In conclusion I think Apple Juice is safe to drink.

I've concluded, after reading the articles above, that the amount of arsenic in the apple juice is really harmless. The FDA and other scientific testing companies have been testing juices for these things long before the companies were accused of having arsenic in their products. Its only natural that the juices should have arsenic and other elements in them, seeing as it comes from the soil.

My biggest question concerning this issue is, where does the arsenic come from. Does the arsenic naturally occurs in the apple, or is it somehow added during the farming or manufacturing process? The differences in arsenic levels between companies points to a farming/production issue introducing the Arsenic, something that should be addressed promptly.

I understand the worry people have when they find out there is a poisonous substance, Arsenic in apples, but apples have been around for centuries and people haven't been dieing let alone getting sick. The little amount of Arsenic per billion that may be found in apple juice isn't harmful to the human race.
If other people think otherwise, that's fine because due to supply and demand it will make apple juice cheaper to buy and there will be more for me!

I think that the arsenic is not an issue. If it was major and people need to really worry about it, these tests Dr. Oz took would have happened long before. Although it may seem like there is a lot of arsenic in the apple juice because of the comparison to water's arsenic supply, there is not. I don't think it is a big problem that needs to take a lot of attention.

Also arsenic is found in the soil and can be naturally found in foods, so it people shouldn't make a big deal about. However, as I read further I learned that the FDA says that the arsenic levels that you would find in apple juice is totally safe and not fatal. Although some of the apple juices have higher levels of arsenic than necessary, they're still perfectly fine to drink.

The FDA should continue to study arsenic in apple juice. Dr. Oz has decided that there is arsenic in apple juice and believes that everyone should be cautious and aware that it could be dangerous. When this was said, many of the apple juice companies were "outraged" and sent responses. they were basically saying that only some samples of their tests were over 10 parts per billion and their respective consumers were healthy and not dead. The Fda also said that they hav been following this for a while and usually do not find traces of arsenic or a cuncerning amount. However, Dr.Oz decided to take matters into his own hands and ask the FDA to make a standard amount of arsenic allowed in apple juice like there is for water.Also,Sen. Charles Schumer, (D) New York, issued a statement AND a letter to the FDA asking the same.In my opinion, apple juice hasnt been a problem before but its not a big deal to make it safe for everyone before things get out of hand(like strikes involving pepper spray).

I think that everyone is going crazy over the fact that Arsenic is in apple juice. It is such a small amount that it wouldn't effect anyone. Apple and other fruit juices have these small trace amounts due to the enviroment. If this small amount of arsenic was harmful, do you think that the Manufacturers would take the risk of selling it to innocent people? It's not like its being put into wine and given to innocent old people. Its just a small trace amount, than will do nothing to you! I've been drinking Apple juice my whole life, and i'm just fine.

I believe that if the FDA hasn't found much of an issue with arsenic in apple juice, then it shouldn't be much of a problem to deal with. Many people have been drinking apple juice for quite a while, so why should we now just take it into consideration? If this has been a devastating issue, then they should have found a solution a while ago. There hasn't been any health problems shown yet so I wouldn't worry at all.

It looks like the media is blowing this issue out of proportion. The article from Dr. Oz is listing the measurements in ppm or parts per million. That is a very minuscule amount, thus confirming the FDA's claim that there are only trace amounts of arsenic in apple juice. (Which I think they were trying not to do.) Also the offending arsenic is naturally occurring in the soil the apples are grown in, the fruit it absorbing it from the earth. There is even some arsenic in the water we drink every day! I think that with the lack of solid evidence that apple juice can kill you, apple juice is a safe and healthy drink.

I think that what Dr. Oz was trying to prove was wrong, as said in the Juicy Juice response, his team was using the method based for testing the level of arsenic in water, which is far different than juice. Along with the fact that when the show decided to air their results told each company what they would be doing. Each company then continued to do their own tests. They all came back with significantly lower results then that aired on the show. To top it off the FDA answered everyones concerns about apple juice and clearly state that apple juice is safe to drink.
I think people should listen to the FDA over Dr. Oz because this type of thing is what they do for a living, and there is no way that they would let these companies sell their juice unless they were absolutely sure that it is safe for human consumption.

In Apple and Eve's statement responding to Dr. Oz's tests, they included the fact the the FDA has expressed 23 parts per billion as a level of concern. In that case, Gerber should be concerned about their product, with Juicy Juice right behind them. Apple juice is a staple of the average American children's diet, and those are two very large suppliers of the drink. However, as the FDA stated, Dr. Oz did not specify whether the levels of Arsenic he found were organic or inorganic, which is a major part of the findings. This is a key point, and I believe that until a further, more thorough test is conducted, consumers don't have much to worry about.

I think that Arsenic in apple juice could be extremely harmful and i fully understand why some parents are boycotting the products. But Arsenic is a poison that is dangerouse in large quantities. in apple juice the small amount of arsenic in it would be deluted and therefore wouldn't be verry dangerouse. i admit its still not good for anyone to have it but it's in the juice so theres a little bit of an aging process going on. if parents dont want to give their child apple jjuice they can instead research for different brands that don't use arsenic or can make their own because many kids like the flavor and it also gives the kid many essential vitamins.

I think that apple juice is good and I think that everything has something bad in it, like cans, and fish, and fried chicken, koolaide.

I think if arsenic was an issue it would have been dealt with a long time ago. also humans have been eating apples for ever so maybe we have built up a tolerance for it. I love apple juice and eating apples so if i have not died i think people should quit worrying.

It's probably the orange company spreading these lie about our beloved apple.(Jk)

I believe that the levels of Arsenic found in apple juice is not dangerous. Since the Arsenic is naturally occurring in the Apples it will not harm us. Although the level of Arsenic in apple juice may be more than the safe amount for water, the FDA has stated that it is still safe to consume.

I agree with bobby. But it is still uncomfortable to see that gerber had the biggest percentage of arsenic. I would think that they especially would try hard to make sure there was no arsenic. But like bobby said nobody has actually died from it and i doubt any body will. The only things that are actually harmed by arsenic is rats in rat traps and I thought it was funny how that in the response from gerber they try to plead with Dr. Oz not to air the episode or mention Gerber's name. If their was no arsenic they should be unafraid of such statements.

Even though Dr. Oz has shown a lot of evidence, to prove that there is Arsenic present in Apple Juice. There is really nothing to be alarmed about because the percentage of arsenic in the juice is very low, therefore, it cannot harm the body.
I do not think company's would have added it to their apple juice, if they knew it would be harmful, knowing that even very young children drink apple juice.

I completely disagree with Dr. Oz as he should have preformed the tests with proper equipment, he did tests used for finding arsenic in water and not juice. Dr. Oz shouldn't have done the tests anyways just because if there was deadly amounts of arsenic in juice people would have figured that out a while ago. The arsenic levels in apple juice are safe and there should be no worries to anyone.

I personally do not think that there is even enough arsenic in the apple juice to make it harmful. Also I don't think I have ever heard of someone dying of apple juice poisoning. I think that if the FDA approved it then it must be fine. Plus Dr. Oz is annoying.

I believe that apple juice is safe to drink , the arentic level in apple juice is very low which means we shouldnt worry about getting sick or anything . Apple juice is a fairly healthy and natural juice, some may have arifical favors although it is not harmful whats so ever. Dr. Oz didnt find much fault in consuming this drink therefore this shouldnt even be a topic to discuss. (:

I think that arsenic is very harmful, but the amounts in apple juice have not been found to have killed anyone or caused a health risk upon them. I think that the arsenic does not cause any problems therefore it shouldn't be a huge topic to talk about, but I do think that the apple juice producers should try to at least get rid of the arsenic.

I have been drinking apple juice for years, and I have not died yet, thank the lord. But, for Apple Juice to be harmful ius preposterous, Go Minute Maid!I read an article with Dr. Oz and the amounts of arsenic are insignificant.

I also agree with the Mr. Ryan. Dr. Oz can be quite annoying, because my mom watches him all the time.
